[이메일][비즈니스] 약어의 뜻 - COB / EOD / EOB / COP /EOP

고객들과 이메일로 커뮤니케이션을 하다보면 약어를 사용하는 경우가 상당히 많습니다. 그런데 저희한테는 익숙하지 않는 약어들도 많고 정확한 뜻을 몰라 헷갈리는 약어들도 꽤 있습니다.

저의 경우는 고객으로부터 받은 메일에 오늘까지 전달해주겠다고 하며 EOD라고 했을 때는 그저 '아 오늘까지'라는 뜻이구나 라고 생각했는데 그 뒤에 그 메일의 답장에 기재된 EOB와 COB를 보면서 '이 약어들이 도대체 뭐가 다른 거지??'라는 의문이 들었습니다.

서로 비슷한 의미를 가지고 있기 때문에 EOD, COB, EOB 등을 혼용하고 있지만, 자칫 원치 않는 결과가 발생할 수 있으니 확실히 인지를 하고 사용하는 것이 좋을 것 같아 각각에 대한 정확한 뜻과 함께 유사한 약어들을 한번 공부해보려고 합니다.

 

COB는 " Close of Business"의 약어로 "업무종료 시간" 을 나타내는 말입니다. 업무시간의 종료를 나타내는 약어인 만큼 보통 5:00 p.m.을 의미합니다. 서로 다른 time zone에서 근무하는 사람들이라도 업무 종료시간 내에서 라는 의미로 사용되기 때문에, 개인적인 의견이지만 EOD보다는 좀 더 의미가 분명한 것 같습니다.

 

EOD는 "End of Day"의 약어로 "하루의 끝"을 나타내는 말입니다. 통상적으로는 업무시간의 종료인 5:00 p.m.을 의미하지만, time zone이나 업무스케줄에 따라 다른 의미로 사용되어 질 수 있으므로 유의해서 사용해야 합니다. 또한 업종마다 다르겠지만 간혹 EOD를 다음날 오전 업무 시작 전으로 이해할 수도 있으므로 서로간의 이해가 필요합니다. 

 

그 외에도 동일한 의미의 약어로 EOB (End of Business), EOP (End of Play), COP (Close of Play) 등이 있습니다.

 

암묵적으로는 COB, EOD, EOB, EOP, COP 가 모두 업무종료시간인 5:00 p.m. 을 의미한다고 해도 서로간의 혼란을 최소화하기 위해서는 명확한 시간을 기입하는 것이 좋을 것 같습니다.

COB - "Close of Business" COB is an abbreviation used in business to emphasize the time in which something should be done. The full length of it means “Close of Business” and it represents the time when you are supposed to go home from work. So if your work time is, i.e. from 9:00 to 17:00 hours, that means COB is 17:00. In short, it represents the end of a workday and can be used despite your timezone. If, for instance, you have an employee working in another time zone, you can use COB abbreviation to emphasize that the work has to be done by the end of the workday. EOD - "End of Day" EOD is shortened term from “End of Day”. Traditionally, it represents the time when you end your business day and go to sleep. It is also used to represent the same thing as COB, which means the end of a workday (17:00 hours). Apart from that, people often use it to represent the full workday, which lasts from the moment the work started (9:00) to the moment it starts again next day (9:00 next day) or as a way to mark full day as a whole, which means the end of day would be midnight. EOB - “End of business” EOP - “End of play” COP - “Close of play”

※ 참고로 COB, EOD 등을 사용할 때는 ~까지를 의미하는 by를 사용하는 경우가 많습니다.

우리는 오늘 업무종료시간 전까지 당신이 확인해주기를 기다렸습니다.

 

Please finish by EOB today.

이메일에서 Due date를 표현할 때 COB, EOD 등을 많이 사용하지만 서로 다른 time zone등의 문제로 명확한 시간을 표현하기 어려울 때도 있습니다. 따라서 좀 더 명확하게 시간을 표현 싶다면 아래와 같이 정확한 시간을 명시하는 게 좋을 것 같습니다.

First of all, I wanted to say that you did an impressive work with our last client, they sounded very satisfied when I talked to them. Keep up the good work!

Second thing, the end of a first quarter is almost due, so could you please send me the quarterly sales report by the end of next week, let’s say Friday at 17:00 EST?
