미국의 시인이자 사상가인 랄프 왈도 에머슨(Ralph Waldo Emerson)이 쓴 "성공이란 무엇인가?(What is Success?)"라는 시를 읽어보려고 합니다.
어릴 때는 성공이라고 하면 막연히 좋은 집에 살고 좋은 음식을 먹으며 좋은 차를 타고 매일 양복입고 넥타이 메고 회사를 다니는 회사원을 생각했습니다. 그런데 나이를 먹고 직장생활을 그래도 꽤 하고 나니 성공이란 물질적으로 풍요로운 삶이라는 단순한 정의가 아니라는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다.
물론 현대와 같은 자본주의 사회에서는 물질적으로 여유있고 부족함 없는 것도 중요하죠. 하지만 정말 중요한 건 돈으로 살 수 없더라구요.
최근에 여러가지 슬픈 일을 겪어서 인지 예전에 읽었던 에머슨의 "성공이란 무엇인가?"라는 시가 가슴에 크게 와닿는 오늘입니다.

성공이란 무엇인가?

To laugh often and much;
많이 그리고 자주 웃는 것.
To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
현명한 사람들에게 존경을 받고
아이들에게 애정을 받는 것.
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;
정직한 비평가로부터 찬사를 얻고
잘못된 친구들의 배신을 견뎌내는 것.
To appreciate beauty;
아름다움의 진가를 알아내는 것
To find the best in others;
다른 이들의 가장 좋은 점을 발견하는 것.
To leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;
건강한 아이를 낳든,
작은 정원을 가꾸든,
사회 환경을 개선하든
세상을 조금이라도 더 좋은 곳으로 만들고 떠나는 것.
To know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived;
당신이 살아 있었기 때문에
단 한사람의 인생이라도 조금 더 쉽게 숨쉴 수 있었음을 아는 것.
This is to have succeeded.
이것이 진정한 성공이다.

- to recognize how good someone or something is and to value him, her, or it:
- to understand a situation and realize that it is important:

appreciate는 고맙다는 의미로 I appreciate.... 이라고 많이 사용해서 Thank you. 의 다른 말 정도로 이해하고 있었습니다. 그런데 이 시에서 사용되는 의미로는 맞지 않아서 찾아보니 사람이나 사물이 얼마나 좋고 가치있는 지를 인식하는 것, 상황을 이해하고 그것이 중요하다는 걸 인식하는 것. 이라는 의미를 가지고 있네요.
There's no point buying him expensive wines - he doesn't appreciate them.
그에게 비싼 와인은 사줘도 소용없어. 그것들을 가치있게 여기지 않거든.
You can’t really appreciate foreign literature in translation.
번역물로는 외국문학의 진정한 가치를 알 수 없어.

patch

This story is good in patches (= some parts are good), but I wouldn't really recommend it.
